What to Do First in a Plumbing Emergency
The first few minutes matter. You do not need to diagnose the whole system before calling, but you can reduce damage by stopping the source and keeping people away from unsafe areas.
Active leak or burst pipe
close the main water shutoff valve.
Gas odor
leave the area and contact the gas utility or emergency services first.
Sewer backup
stop using sinks, tubs, showers, laundry, dishwashers and toilets.
Flooded bathroom or laundry area
move electronics, rugs, boxes and valuables out of the wet area.
Leaking water heater
shut off the cold-water supply to the unit if accessible.
Sewer odor
stop using fixtures and keep people away from the affected room.
Do not cut pipes, open walls, remove fixtures or pour chemical drain cleaner into standing water. Those steps can make the repair more dangerous and may cause more damage.
When to Call an Emergency Plumber
Water can travel under cabinets, flooring, drywall and ceilings before the full damage is visible. A broken line can also put stress on nearby fittings. If water is still running, shut it off if possible and call for help.
Not sure if it is an emergency?
Emergency Plumbing Repairs We Handle
Natan Plumbing handles urgent plumbing problems for Redwood City homes and businesses. The goal is to find the source, stop new damage where possible, explain the repair path and complete the approved work safely.
A visible leak is not always the source. Water can run along framing, cabinet bottoms, supply lines or flooring seams before appearing in another spot. We trace the problem before recommending the fix. For non-urgent leak diagnosis, see leak repair services.
An overflowing toilet can damage flooring and nearby rooms fast. We stop the immediate problem, clear the blockage and check whether the issue is limited to the toilet or connected to a larger drainage problem. For regular toilet work, see toilet repair and installation.
How Our Emergency Plumbing Visit Works
-
Call and describe the problem
Tell us where the issue is, whether water or wastewater is still moving, what type of property it is and whether the area is safe to enter. -
Get immediate safety guidance
We may ask you to shut off water, stop using fixtures, avoid chemical cleaners or keep people away from the affected area. -
On-site diagnosis
The plumber checks the symptom, traces the likely cause and looks for related risks such as nearby fittings, shared drain lines, water heater connections or main-line symptoms. -
Clear repair options
Before approved work begins, we explain what needs to be repaired, what can be stabilized, and whether a larger follow-up repair may be needed. -
Repair or stabilize the system
When access, parts and conditions allow, we complete the repair during the visit. If a full repair requires additional parts, access or planning, we help stabilize the issue and define the next step.

Recent Emergency-Type Plumbing Work
Main Line Backup on a Property with an ADU
A homeowner noticed several drains slowing down rather than one isolated clog. Because the property had an ADU and accessible cleanouts, the line could be approached without opening finished areas first.
The restriction was farther down the drainage path. Equipment was used to restore flow, and the homeowner was told which warning signs would suggest the line was starting to slow again.
Exterior Spigot Line Failure
This customer had water loss near an exterior hose connection. The older galvanized supply section had corroded and separated from its old route.
Natan Plumbing exposed the failed section, replaced the damaged pipe, rerouted copper neatly along the wall, secured the line, and installed a quarter-turn hose bib with durable press connections.
75-Gallon Water Heater Emergency Replacement
The old 75-gallon water heater was corroded and near failure. During inspection, Natan Plumbing also found poorly installed copper piping with several corroded connections.
We replaced the water heater and rebuilt the surrounding supply and discharge lines with Type L copper. All joints were completed with the ProPress system for strong, reliable connections.
The homeowner now has a safer setup and lower risk of future leaks around the water heater.
